Peel Police Service Board and Peel Regional Police Call for Strengthened Federal Collaboration on Organized Crime, Auto Theft, and Border Security

Brampton, ON – The Peel Police Service Board and Peel Regional Police have sent a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney and key members of Cabinet highlighting the need for greater federal coordination on critical public safety challenges—including bail reform, firearms trafficking, organized auto theft, and modernized border enforcement.

The letter outlines recommendations to enhance federal legislation targeting violent and repeat offenders, bolster border security to disrupt the trafficking of illegal firearms and fentanyl, and advance the development of a national Public Safety Broadband Network (PSBN) to ensure resilient and interoperable communication for emergency services across Canada.

“Our communities are facing increasingly complex safety challenges that no single jurisdiction can address alone,” said Nando Iannicca, Chair of the Peel Police Service Board. “The Board and Peel Regional Police have been working actively on these issues, and we see this moment as an opportunity to strengthen coordination with the federal government and with partners across the country. Together, we can build a more integrated and effective response to the evolving threats facing Canadians.”

Peel Regional Police has played a key role in several recent cross-border investigations, including a joint operation with the FBI and Canadian law enforcement agencies that dismantled a transnational drug and firearms trafficking network. The Service has also spearheaded regional advancements in secure communications, establishing a model for a PSBN and engaging national partners on the need for dedicated infrastructure to support real-time information sharing in public safety.

“We are seeing organized crime adapt rapidly—using technology, borders, and gaps in legislation to their advantage,” said Chief Nishan Duraiappah. “Addressing these challenges requires new tools, better data, and stronger alignment between all levels of government. Peel Regional Police is committed to supporting a national approach that enhances safety and protects our communities.”

The letter also highlights Peel Region’s unique geography—home to Canada’s largest airport and a major intermodal corridor—and its readiness to support operational partnerships with the federal government, including through the expansion of its aerial operations infrastructure.
